The Dark Night of the Soul
St. John of the Cross created the term “Dark night of the soul” in the 1500’s to describe a period of time in one’s life, where they feel God or life force is absent. A person can’t find joy in anything they do no matter what they do. It’s as if an ocean use to be present in one’s life but now it has been transformed into a desert vastness that seems unending.
A dark night of the soul can take many years, and it is a period of time when a person’s life is completely transformed. They will come out of the experience a completely different person.
Spiritual Journey
Each of these stages has challenges of their own and has an acclimation period where it takes a person time to get use to a new way of being. Spiritual coaching and guidance can be beneficial for each of these stages, as a person can feel all alone and feel most people don’t understand them.
Stage 1 — Dark night of the soul
Stage 2 — Transformation into your authentic self
Stage 3 — Integration
Integration of your authentic self into the world, where people see the changes within you. Life takes on a real clarity, and true intelligence is seen as common sense.
Stage 4 — No self stage
The buddhist call this stage being the Buddha, where a person can lose all sense of being a person in the body and mind most of the time. The mind is freed up from thinking and worrying and now the body is living and experiencing. This is a stage many can experience right before death, and mostly in the later years of life, but people can experience it early on in life.

Tanya’s Story
Tanya became interested in these stages because she had a spiritual experience 14 years ago, at the height of her addiction, when she was having a withdrawal from opiates. Half of her body disappeared and her mind stopped. A silence seemed to engulf her for about two weeks. For the next three or four years, Tanya underwent an illness, where she developed a high sensitivity to many foods. Her hair started falling out. She lost 50 pounds. Nothing conclusive was found medically except for low Vitamin D, but Tanya is convinced the event caused a certain rewiring to happen in her body that completely transformed her and continues to transform her.
“I think it’s important to have a professional validate experiences such as these, because a person can feel crazy and/or scared when going through them. These experiences are in fact very normal, and there is now research and much anecdotal evidence to back this up. The human being is made of three levels, of body/mind/spirit. Science now proves this. So these experiences need to be normalized. If we don’t, people who take on the roles of gurus and spiritual teachers will continue to appear as if they have something others don’t, leaving people vulnerable to manipulation and abuse and cults.”

Imagine being on a quest for something because you feel lost as a kid. That’s what happened to me. I can’t remember ever feeling like I belonged here. Since I was a child, I felt at odds with people on this planet.
The world didn’t make sense to me. I wondered how we could go to church every Sunday and worship a “jealous” God. I just didn’t agree with how people interpreted the Bible or other sacred texts. I thought that if there is a God, he has to be the nicest and kindest being on earth.
My dad would say God loves you more than I do. In my mind, I thought, well then, God can’t be the jealous and aggressive God that exists in the Bible. If he’s nicer than my dad, he must be even more compassionate, chilled, and easygoing. My inability to understand the God I visited with my family every week put me at odds with myself and who I was.
I started looking for that missing piece of myself early in life. I tried different things as I got older, like yoga, meditation, the law of attraction and manifestation, going to satsang gatherings, reading books about enlightenment, drugs, and tripping out to free my mind. Some of these practices helped me, and others, like addiction, made me see that hell actually exists here in the form of being a prisoner to something else.
All I wanted was to find the missing piece that would make me finally feel whole, and I just didn’t know how to get there.
I suppose I was searching for total bliss or whatever I thought the Buddha, Jesus, or Mohammed had attained. I wanted “that.” For me, addiction was the window that helped me find a connection to myself—everything from descending myself into the fire of the lowest frequencies and then rising from that red abyss to find people welcoming me into freedom.
Sobriety taught me life is simple.
I see life for what it is, not the stories my mind has created now. It becomes clear if I’m supposed to do something because doors open up. When I’m not meant to go in a particular direction, doors are unopenable.
My spiritual coaching sessions are for those seeking who they really are and who they are adamant about finding. It’s for the relentless pursuit of truth. Truth is simple. I hope I can help dismantle everything you think enlightenment is and come to the freedom you have been so persistently pursuing here and now.
